Frequently Asked Questions

Where did you make the cake?

This is the first cake that I made in an offsite location! The wedding was in Baltimore, which is quite far from The Gingerbread Cat HQ. So, the cake was made in my mother's kitchen. Here I'm making one of the many batches of fudge filling.

When did you make the cake and how long did it take?

I started 10 days before the wedding by making the three top tiers and then freezing them. Here, Rachel is helping me unwrap them so they can defrost.

Then, I finished the bottom tier on the Friday before the wedding (while Chinese food was awaiting us) and covered it in fondant on Saturday.

Where was Ben while you made the cake?

He sat in the kitchen and watched (and ate tofu) part of the time. He played with my parents. He hung out in Ben corner. He napped.

How did you decorate the cake?

Jamie Blume helped me prepare 500 gold balls the week before the wedding. We had a rubber stamp made to match the wedding invitation, and then stamped the flower design onto the cake and then hand-painted it pink.

How did you transport the cake?

In a box in the back of my dad's SUV. Then we wedged the box in there using other boxes. Sadly, he wouldn't let me hang the sign in the back window....

How did you transport the cake?

...When we got to the museum I convinced a guard that I wasn't a vendor and then he let me borrow their cart. I don't know how we would have gotten that 60 lb cake upstairs without it.

How much did you have to do on wedding day?

After we dropped the cake off at the museum on the morning of the wedding, my dad helped me put all 500 gold balls on the cake. I arranged the flowers before the ceremony. I wish I had a picture of myself working on the cake in my bridesmaid dress!

Most importantly-- how did it taste?

It was delicious! Even the fondant and gold balls were a hit. We had to take the cake away before the guests pulled all the balls off! The inside was chocolate and vanilla butter cake, and there was nothing left at the end of the night!
